Future So Bright, Gotta Wear… Cat Eye Sunglasses

If anyone were to ask, I am a cat person. I love dogs too, so maybe I go both ways. Speaking of two ways… There are two basic shapes of glasses I feel comfortable in, on being the ‘Jackie O’ oversized round shape, which you commonly see me wear…it’s probably the most consistent part of my wardrobe throughout my life. The second type is the cat eye… though in recent years, it’s been hard to get my hands on a pair, and thankfully it’s been making it’s way back into the mainstream, since Alexander Wang came out with a modern geometric version, I’ve been craving the return of the classic shape.

Luckily, on the trip to the West Village with Market Publique, we stopped in on the Cynthia Rowley shop to check out what’s new, and lo hand behold I find these beautiful tortoise cat eye glasses with blue lenses… As soon as I put them on, it was meant to be.. the perfect blend of vintage style tweaked to a perfectly modern shape, and oh so dramatic. Yes, these are my new sunglasses, you’ll be seeing me wear them around quite a bit.

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Rowley’s Instant Gratification

Wednesday, February 10th 2010

With today marking the beginning of yet another Fashion Week, as hundreds of designers prepare to show their fall collections, let us take a moment to consider how the immediacy of information in the Internet era has created a disconnect for consumers. Images from the fall shows will be streaming online as they happen, at the same time that the spring collections, which were shown last September, are arriving in stores.

As Donna karan said in an address at Parsons the New School for Design last week, “There is too much in-for-ma-tion.”

But barring the unlikely event that people will stop looking at computers, designers have to accept this as a reality.

One is dealing with it in a novel way. Cynthia Rowley, who will show her collection on Friday afternoon, plans to make some of her designs available that very night when she opens a temporary store, for a month, at the Gagosian Shop at 988 Madison Avenue…

Fall 2010 Ready-To-Wear

Friday, February 12th 2010

Other designers may lament the lag time between clothes’ debut on the runway and their real-world on-sale date - but Cynthia Rowley actually tackled the issue head-on. Partnering up with the Gagosian Shop, she is offering arty limited-edition duplications of her latest looks: Rowley’s team took photos of each garment from the front and back, printed the images onto fabric, and cut them out in the shape of the original. The quick copies were available the night of the show.

The “chic monster-girl collection” was how Rowley described Fall, and it was heavy on volume and texture. The volume was delivered in oversized puffer coats, airy skirts with bubble hems, and a patterned silk dress with rows of ruching. Texture was added with an abundance of feather and fringe trim on everything from blouses to cropped jackets.

“There’s already a wait list for these pieces,” Rowley said of her faster-fashion solution, the day before, “meaning people are trying to buy versions of Fall ‘10 before I even show them. How crazy is that?”

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

From Catwalk To Closet, Faster

Wednesday, February 17th 2010

This just might be the boldest fashion statement at the shows so far - letting shoppers actually buy the clothes.

Some designers are chipping away at one of the industry’s most elite and stubborn schedules: the six-month lag it takes for runway looks to appear in stores, if they appear at all. Driving the change, they say, is a desire to stay a step ahead of knock-offs and to win over consumers after the high-ed clothing sales were battered by the economy. The Web is also helping, making it possible for some designers to circumvent traditional retailers and reach their customer directly…
